Fence Panel & Post Calculator

Allow for actual post width, separate straight runs, shared corner posts and a shortened final panel.

Enter your measurements and click Calculate.
How this calculation works

Bays = ceiling((run length − one post width) ÷ (clear panel + post width + fitting allowance)). A run uses bays + 1 posts. Shared endpoints are subtracted explicitly. Units apply to every entered length.

How many fence panels and posts do I need?

Measure each straight run outside-to-outside of its end posts. Enter the actual panel width, post width and total bracket clearance per bay. If two runs share a corner post, subtract that shared endpoint once. Gate openings are excluded from the runs; add only gate posts not already counted.

Worked example

For 10 m and 6 m runs, 1.83 m panels and 0.1 m posts, with zero fitting allowance, the plan uses 6 + 4 = 10 panels. The two runs need 7 + 5 posts; subtracting one shared corner leaves 11 unique posts. At GBP 35 per panel and GBP 20 per post, materials cost GBP 570 before delivery.

Full panels or equally trimmed panels?

The final-panel option keeps earlier panels full width. If that creates no usable final panel, use the equal-width alternative. Not every panel can be cut: check the manufacturer before choosing either layout. This is a panel-fence quantity estimate, not a picket, rail or structural calculator.
